HSS (UK) Champions Democracy through UK Parliament Week

For over 9 years, Hindu Swayamsevak Sangh (UK) has been a dedicated participant in UK Parliament Week, demonstrating an unwavering commitment to democratic engagement and civic education. This sustained involvement has not gone unnoticed, with HSS (UK) gaining recognition in being awarded UK PARLIAMENT WEEK PARTNER OF THE YEAR award in 2020 as a key partner for its outstanding contributions to this important national initiative.

UK Parliament Week is an annual celebration that brings democracy to life, encouraging people from all backgrounds to engage with the UK’s democratic processes. For HSS (UK), participation in this national event represents a natural extension of its core principles and a meaningful opportunity to strengthen the fabric of British society.

At the heart of HSS UK’s philosophy lie two fundamental principles: Sangathan (community cohesion) and Sanskar (ethical values). These principles emphasise the importance of building strong, cohesive communities whilst nurturing positive values that guide individual and collective behaviour. This philosophy aligns seamlessly with Parliament’s essential role in fostering a democratic society where responsible citizens can flourish and contribute positively to the nation.

HSS (UK) is a really important organisation that brings people together to discuss, explore different ideas and it was great to be part of UK PARLIAMENT WEEK at their local branch.  You are the future as young people and what we have to do as politicians is to give you the skills and the opportunities, and support you and empower you to be the architects of the future

– JOHN SLINGER MP, RUGBY

At all our Shakhas (Chapters) the synergy between our values and UK Parliament Week’s objectives creates a powerful platform for community engagement. Parliament, as the cornerstone of UK democracy, provides the framework within which diverse communities can voice their concerns, share their aspirations, and work collectively towards common goals.  This is Sangathan, communities thriving  when individuals come together with a shared purpose and mutual respect. Similarly, Sanskar emphasises the cultivation of positive values such as integrity, respect, responsibility, and service. These values are fundamental to effective democratic participation. A healthy democracy requires citizens who understand their rights and responsibilities, who engage constructively with democratic institutions, and who contribute positively to society. UK Parliament Week provides exactly this opportunity, offering everyone a chance to understand how the democratic process works and how they can engage with it meaningfully.

Across the UK, young children have participated in debates, mock voting sessions, and engaging Q&A sessions with MPs and councillors. These hands-on experiences bring democracy to life in ways that textbooks simply cannot. Through HSS (UK)’s Parliament Week activities over the years, the organisation hopes to inspire many young people to take on active roles within politics, whether as future MPs, councillors, civil servants, or informed citizens who actively participate in shaping their communities.

Through its UK Parliament Week involvement, HSS (UK) has helped countless individuals understand the mechanics of British democracy. Participants learn about the role of MPs, how laws are made, how committees function, and most importantly, how ordinary citizens can make their voices heard. This knowledge transforms passive observers into active participants in democracy.

The impact of this engagement extends far beyond simple education. UK Parliament Week, supported by organisations like HSS (UK), empowers people to recognise that democracy is not merely about voting every few years. It is about ongoing engagement, constructive dialogue, and taking responsibility for shaping the society we want to live in.

HSS (UK)’s commitment to UK Parliament Week reflects a broader dedication to building bridges between communities and democratic institutions. By encouraging members and the wider community to engage with UK Parliament Week activities, HSS (UK) helps create informed, confident, responsible citizens who understand their role in British democracy and are equipped to contribute positively to society

Everything HSS (UK) has done is a real valuable contribution to extending knowledge and information around our democracy
