Teacher’s Appreciation Day (aka Shikshak Vandan Din):
Honouring Gurus and Celebrating Teachers in Hindu Culture with HSS (UK)
In Hindu culture, teachers are seen as far more than individuals who simply deliver lessons in a classroom. They are Gurus — guides who leads us from tamas (darkness, ignorance and negativity) toward jyoti (light, knowledge, and wisdom). A Guru is someone who shapes not only our intellect but also our character and way of life, helping us become better human beings.
Across the UK, Hindu Swayamsevak Sangh (HSS UK) branches uphold this timeless tradition through Shikshak Vandan Din, a day dedicated to honouring and expressing heartfelt gratitude to teachers. This cherished annual events celebrated the invaluable role of educators while building bridges between schools and the Hindu community.
During these gatherings, invited teachers are welcomed and appreciated in a traditional Hindu manner. They experience the depth of the Hindu culture through activities that are both enjoyable and meaningful — from team-building games that promote unity and self-discipline, to short rituals (samskaras) that highlights the spirtual essence of education. Discussions and interactions also provide valuable insights into Hindu Values, fostering mutual respect and understanding.
Many teachers share that the experience leaves a lasting impression. They feel truly valued for their dedication and express eagerness to strengthen their relationship with the local Hindu community.
Shikshak Vandan Din reminds us that teachers are not just instructors — they are guru , margdarshaks (path-guides), and true pillars of society, leading us from ignorance to knowledge, and from knowledge to wisdom.
“I have had a wonderful evening here experiencing all of the things that the children have been experiencing at HSS (UK). Learning all about the principles and values being taught has been absolutely incredible and enlightening.”
